Neck Lift

Overview of the surgery:
Neck lift is a minor surgical procedure that improves the appearance of a patient’s neck by removing excess skin and tightening the muscles underneath.
The doctor then usually makes small incisions behind the ears and underneath the patient’s chin, through which most of the surgery will be done. Reshaping the neck is a complicated process, and the surgeon will likely use a variety of methods to achieve the best possible result. The complexity of neck lift surgery means that it should only be trusted to an experienced, knowledgeable doctor.

Duration of the operation:
The surgery takes 1-2 hour’s average.

Post operative care:
Typically, neck lift surgery involves rapid recovery, though patients are advised to stay in bed for a few days after the surgery and avoid excess movement. Some may experience minor bruising and swelling, but these should subside within a week and should not be severe. Most doctors will have patients wear a compression bandage for about a week after the procedure to promote healing, and patients are advised to monitor their condition carefully for any complications arising from the surgery. Wear button-down shirt, so you don’t have to pull a shirt over your head, which could disturb the bandages.

Recovery period:
Most people can return to work in 10 to14 days. If you participate in other sports or are physically active, you will have to wait at least three weeks.

Possible risk and complications:
There are risks with any kind of surgery, and cosmetic procedures are no exception. In choosing to undergo a neck lift, the patient risks infection and possible allergic reaction to the anesthesia; the patient may also experience excessive scarring from the neck lift and other such complications. The occurrence of these effects is very rare, however, and can be reduced further with the choice of an experienced doctor. The patient should be sure to tell his or her doctor about any existing medical condition or medication being taken.

Anesthesia use:
Neck lift will be done under General Anesthesia.

Hospital admission:
This procedure may be performed in the cosmetic surgeon’s office-based facility, an outpatient surgery center, or at a hospital. This procedure is usually done on an outpatient basis

Preparation before Surgery
  • Assessment of the medical history (any allergies, serious medical condition and all medications taken both prescribed and non-prescribed), physical examination, and laboratory tests will be performed during consultation.
  • Blood and urine samples will be collected for routine preoperative laboratory tests.
  • Smoking must be avoided for about 3-4 weeks prior to surgery, as nicotine interferes with circulation and will greatly affect healing process.
  • You will likely to be asked to stop drinking alcohol, a week before the surgery and throughout your recovery period.
  • Avoid taking any medications such as hormones, anticoagulants, anabolic steroids and supplements at least 4-6 weeks to prevent complicating medical factors prior to surgery. Avoid taking aspirin, anti-inflammatory drugs and herbal supplements as they can increase bleeding.
  • Most people are advised to eat healthily, because the body will need nutrients to heal.
